Electric energy from biomas is produced throught the ORC proces (Organic Rankine Cycle). The ORC processsis a steam process with an organic liquid where thermal energy is transformed into electric power.

The working liquid shows adequate thermo-dynamic characteristics for small, non-central devices. High efficiency can be achieved even with low temperatures.

ORC process
(Organic Rankine Cycle)

A process producing electric energy and heat of biomass (e.g. wooden chips, hay / straw biomass) with the help of co-generation process.

Biomass is burned in a boiler. Hot gases deliver heat in the exchanger to oil circuit. The remaining heat is further reduced in water exchanger; the waste gases are taken to surrounding environment through the chimney after having been cleaned in the filter.

The thermo-oil circuit constitutes a source of energy for generation of electric power in ORC facility. It supplies a closed circuit in which the turbo generator is driven by evaporation of silicon oil. Then the steam condenses and the released thermal energy is taken back to the heat network in form of warm water.

In the water exchanger of the biomass boiler, the water circuit is further heated up to the required value.

The ORC device works like a conventional steam power station in principle.

Instead of water, working liquid is used in a closed system in which it evaporates in the exchanger (evaporator) and drives the steam turbine with generator.

In the next exchanger (condenser), the liquid is cooled down to condensation and pumped with a pump back to the exchanger. The heat taken away can be used for technological purposes or for heating of buildings.

System principle

The ORC device transforms thermal energy into electric current. The heating and cooling circuits create pressure difference in the device. The pressure difference is used to drive the turbine with the help of steam.

The thermal energy is brought to the device through the circuit of thermo-oil warmed up in the boiler. The hot oil in the exchanger causes evaporation of the silicon compound - working liquid.

The steam is taken through the turbine, in the jet of which the tension is reduced. During that process, expansion and considerable acceleration are generated.

The steam jet drives the blade wheel of the turbine whose kinetic energy is transformed into electric current by the generator. The underpressure needed to reduce the tension in the turbine is generated by the condenser. The obtained heat is taken away through the water circuit and used for heating.

The waste steam is liquefied in the condenser; the condensate is pumped to the exchanger again, after having been heated up by the waste steam of the turbine in the other exchanger. In principle, the ORC device works like a conventional steam power station. Silicon compound is used as working liquid instead of water. But thanks to its special characteristics, no heating (overheating) of steam is needed after the evaporation. The process becomes simpler and more efficient.
